The Davidic covenant, forms the basis for the future earthly Kingdom of the Messiah.
2 Samuel:7, forms the foundation of Christ’s earthly kingdom, made of the seed of David.
Statement of the covenant:
2 Samuel 7:8-9, “Now therefore so shalt thou say unto my servant David, thus saith the LORD of hosts, I took thee from the sheepcote (sheepfold), from following the sheep, to be ruler over my people, over Israel: and I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest, and have cut off all thine enemies out of thy sight, and have made thee a great name, like unto the name of the great men that are in the earth.”
Verse 10-11: “Moreover I will appoint a place for my people Israel, and will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own, and move no more; neither shall the children of wickedness afflict them any more, as beforetime. And as since the time that I commanded judges to be over my people Israel, and have caused thee to rest from all thine enemies. Also the LORD telleth thee that he will make thee an house.
Verse 12-13, “And when thy days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set up thy seed after thee, which shall proceed out of thy bowels, and I will establish his kingdom. He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever. I will be his father, and he shall be my son. If he commit iniquity, I will chasten him with the rod of men, and with the stripes of the children of men:
Verse 15-16, But my mercy shall not depart away from him, as I took it from Saul, whom I put away before thee. And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.”
Romans 1:3, concerning his (the Father’s) Son Jesus Christ, which was made of the seed of David according to the flesh.”
This covenant was promised to King David at Jerusalem by Nathan. Recall the above mentioned covenant promises of a land, a nation, for the coming kingdom. The Davidic covenant provides a king for the kingdom; it’s also an amplification of the “seed,” aspect of the Abrahamic Covenant.
It is outlined in 2 Samuel 7:8 thru 16. I will only comment on a few verses, you can read the whole section if you like.
Verse 10, “I (God) will appoint a place for my people Israel, and I will plant them, that they may dwell in a place of their own.” Verse 12, “And when the days be fulfilled, and thou shalt sleep with thy fathers, I will set thy seed (Christ) after thee, — I will establish his kingdom.
Verse 13, “He shall build a house for my name, and I (God) will stablish the throne of His (Christ’s) kingdom for ever.”
Verse 16, “And thine house and thy kingdom shall be established for ever before thee: thy throne shall be established for ever.”
This covenant promised by God to David, a Land, a Son, a House, and a Throne.
A Son promised:
Joseph, Mary’s husband was descended from Solomon, Matthew 1:6-16. Through Joseph, the royal throne of the Davidic dynasty is legally passed to Jesus Christ. God promises to preserve Solomon’s throne, it representing royal authority forever, but not Solomon’s seed, 2 Samuel 13:14.
Mary’s genealogy shows that she descended from Nathan, another son of David. The Messianic bloodline bypassed Solomon, exactly as predicted. On the other hand, Joseph, Mary’s husband, he not being Jesus biological father was descended from Solomon. Through Joseph the royal authority passed to Jesus Christ. This is the reason for a virgin birth.
Conclusion: The Messianic throne, but not the physical lineage came through Solomon. Jeremiah prophesied that no descendant of the genealogical line of David would ever occupy David’s throne. Joseph was Jesus legal father, his lineage traced back to David. No physical descendant of Joseph could have been the Messiah.
The smallest details of God’s word are spelled out, and then fulfilled to the letter.
The idea of a throne, does not point to a literal throne, but the authority to rule. That right and authority was promised by God to never pass away from David’s line and now has been passed on to Jesus Christ who is the King of Kings. When Revelation 20 is taken literally, it points to the future Second Coming of our Lord, and His 1000 year reign on earth, the headquartered being in Jerusalem.
Jeremiah outlines the terms in Jeremiah 31:31 thru 36. This covenant is directed at a united nation of Israel.
Jeremiah 31:31, “The days come, saith the LORD, that I will make (literally) a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah (12 Tribes.)”
We know the 12 tribes were divided after Solomon’s death. But they will eventually regain their individual identities. Revelation 7:4-8. Abraham was promised some 300,000 sq. miles, as where Israel only occupies less than 10,000 today.
Jeremiah 31:34, The Lord promises, “I will forgive their iniquity (forever) I will remember their sin no more.”
This is all future. So in answer to the question, “Is God finished with Israel? No.”
