Gift from God.
Isa.9:6, “For unto us a child is born, unto us a Son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and His name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, the Prince of peace.”
Then came the announcement, to Joseph: Matt.1:23, “Behold, a virgin shall be with child, and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call his name Em-man’-ual, which being interpreted is, God with us.”
Luke 1:35, The angel Gabriel came to Mary and said, “The Holy Ghost shall come upon thee, and the power of the Highest shall overshadow thee: therefore also that holy thing = (Jesus) which shall be born of thee shall be called the Son of God.”
The fulfillment:
1 Tim.3:16, “God = (Jesus) was manifest = (came) in the flesh.”
Matt.1:25, “And he = (Joseph) called His name Jesus.”
Isaiah, word for word,
1. “For unto us a child is born.” This laid the groundwork for this great event.
John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son.”
Luke 2:11, “For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, which is Christ the Lord.”
Matt.3:17, quotes, Ps.2:7, “I will declare the decree: the LORD hath said unto me, Thou art my Son; this day have I begotten = (to bring forth) thee,” the Father’s great and wonderful gift to us, on which no man can make a claim.
Rom.6:23, “the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord.”
2. “And the government shall be upon his shoulder” A badge, or ensign of one’s rank of office was worn on the shoulders of state leaders, this signified their position in government.
Isa.22:22, “And the key of the house of David will I lay upon His = (Messiah’s) shoulder, so he shall open, and none shall shut; and he shall shut, and none shall open.” The government upon the shoulders of the King Jesus, is in marked contrast to the “yoke and staff” of an oppressor.
Isa.9:4, “for thou hast broken the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor.” The King to come, shall receive the kingdom of this earth from His Father, to vindicate it from the misrule of those to whom it had been entrusted. They held it in defiance of the Father’s right. Now the Father will assert His right by and through His only begotten Son, who, Heb.1:2, “He appointed Heir of all things.”
C. Dan.7:13-14, “I =(Daniel) saw in the night visions, and, behold, one like the Son of man = (Jesus) came with the clouds of heaven, and came to the Ancient of days = (the Father), and they brought him near before Him. And there was given Him = (Jesus) dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve Him: His dominion, is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.”
3. “And his name shall be called.” This points to the Lord’s essential characteristics and His offices, He has been given a name distinct from any other.
Matt.1:21-23, “thou shalt call his name Jesus,” with verses 23, “they shall call His name Emmanuel, which being interpreted is, God with us.” His name implies character, dignity, is honorable, appellation of title.
Eph.1:21, “Far above — every name that is named, not only in this world, but also in that which is to come.” Acts 4:12, “For there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved.” Heb.1:4, “a more excellent name.” Emphatic, the name of Christ, as periphrasis for Christ himself, in His being, attributes, relations, and manifestations.
Jesus as God where His name is said to be hollowed, revealed, invoked, and honored.
Matt. 9:6, “Hollowed be thy name,” as in all that the name of God includes, Jesus himself in all His attributes and relations. Luke 11:2, “Hollowed be thy name,” with Luke 1:49, “Holy is His name.” Rom.9:17, “my name = (Jesus) might be declared throughout all the earth.” 2 Tim.2:19, “Let every one that nameth the name of Christ depart from iniquity.”
Of Christ, as the Messiah, where His name is said to be honored, revered, believed on, invoked, etc. Phil.2:10, “That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow.”
2 Thes.1:12, “That the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you.” 1 Cor.1:2, “in every place call upon the name of Jesus Christ our Lord.”
Where benefits are said to be received in, or through the name of Christ, John 20:31, “that believing ye might have life through His name.” Eph.5:20, “Giving thanks always — in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ.”
4. He is called, “Wonderful” He is both Father and Son. His Hebrew name “Joshua,” means Jehovah is salvation, yet he is called, “Immanuel,” which is “God with us.” He is called a child, yet He is our Counselor, the “mighty God.” Can anyone question why He is called, “Wonderful?”
A. 1 Tim.3:16, “Great is the mystery of godliness,” This is the divine plan of salvation embodied in the Lord Jesus.
B. Col.1:27, “To whom God would make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles; which is Christ in you, the hope of glory: once hidden from, but now revealed to us, who believe.” Only to those who’s love, reverence = (fear mingled with respect) and veneration = (respect mingled with awe), for Jesus, will these mysteries be revealed.
C. 1 Cor.2:7 thru 14, “But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory.” The Gospel of Jesus Christ hidden from the foundation of the world, until revealed by the preaching of the apostles.
Verse 8, “Which none of the princes of this world knew: for had they known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.” He transcends all the rulers of the universe.
Verse 9, “But it is written, Eye hath not seen, nor ear heard, neither have entered into the heart of man, the things which God hath prepared for them that love him.” The mystery of the Gospel now belongs to us.
Verse 10. “But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.” The Holy Spirit reveals to us, the councils of God.
Verse 11. “For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man but the Spirit of God.”
Verse 12. “Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.”
Verse 13. “Which things also we speak, not in the words which man’s wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.”
Verse 14. “But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God, = (the Gospel message) for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.”
This is the Excellency of Christ Jesus, who is the exceeding subject of the above, and who in himself is “Wonderful.”
5. He is called, “Counselor” Jesus who is intimately acquainted with the counsels of His Father, came to reveal His Father’s will to men.
Ps.16:7, “I will bless the LORD who hath given me counsel: my reins = (mind) also instruct me in the night season = (night season, when God was silent).”
Rom.11:33-34, “O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord or who hath been His counselor?”
1 Cor.1:24, “but unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.”
Col.2:3, “In whom are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.”
6. He is called, “the mighty God”
Isa.10:21, “The remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob = (Israel), unto the mighty God = (Jesus) .”
Ps.24:8, “Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, the Lord mighty in Battle.”
Titus 2:13, “Looking for that blessed hope, and the glorious appearing of the great God and our Savior Jesus Christ.”
6. He is called the “everlasting Father” This is what marks Him as Wonderful. First, He is called a “child,” yet He is the, “everlasting Father.” A Father who feeds us, for He is the bread of life, who counsels and guides with His Holy Spirit. He is our Creator, He who laid the foundation of the earth. He is the Author and finisher of our faith, the founder of the Christian church.
John 10:30, Jesus said, “I and my Father are one.” Jesus is the exact image and brightness of the Father’s glory. He is our Father.
John 14:9, Jesus said, “Have I been so long time with you, and yet hast thou not known me, Philip? he that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father?” Here Jesus claims equality with His Father, for all things are given to Him by the Father. Jesus is to be called the everlasting Father.
7. He is called the “Prince of peace.”
Isa.9:5, speaks of a time when the LORD shall come, doing battle against the forces of evil. “For every battle of the warrior is with confused noise, and garments rolled in blood; but this shall be with burning and fuel of fire.” These prophesies looks forward to the time of Jesus, when He visits those who sit in darkness. He will bring deliverance to the captives. He will break the yoke and bondage of sin, and of Satan. His Gospel will remove the burden of guilt and corruption, and we will be brought into His kingdom as the children of God.
Gen.49:10, “The scepter shall not depart from Judah, = (the tribe of Judah from whom are Lord Jesus came) nor a lawgiver from between his feet, until Shiloh = (name given to Messiah) come; and unto Him shall the gathering of the people be.”
Hos.2:18, “And in that day will I make a covenant for them with the beasts of the field, and with the fowls of heaven, and with the creeping things of the ground: and I will break the bow and the sword and the battle out of the earth = (God will disarm the enemy), and will make them to lie down safely.”
Luke 2:14, “Glory to God in the highest and on earth peace, good will toward men.” The Father reconciles men to each other and to himself, through His Son.
Eph.2:14, “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.” Jesus Christ died for both Jew and Gentile, He destroyed the wall that separated the Jew from the Gentile. He became our peace-offering, to reconcile both to God, and to each other. He formed one church out of the believers of both the Jew and Gentile.
This is our Lord and our Savior Jesus Christ. When you give, give in the name of Jesus, giving all the praise, honor and glory due Him.
